UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONCERN

About Hyperpigmentation & Dark Spots

Hyperpigmentation — the overproduction of melanin that causes dark patches, spots, or uneven skin tone — is one of the most common skin concerns we treat. It can be triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes, acne scarring, or inflammation. Effective treatment requires understanding the type and depth of pigmentation, which is why our approach begins with an AI skin analysis. Melasma, sun spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation each respond to different protocols. Our physician-supervised treatments are carefully calibrated for your specific skin tone — especially important for melanin-rich skin, where aggressive treatments can worsen pigmentation.

YOUR TREATMENT OPTIONS

Recommended Treatments

Every treatment plan is customized during your consultation. Here are the treatments we most commonly recommend for hyperpigmentation & dark spots.

Chemical Peels

Medical-grade peels with glycolic acid, TCA, or combination formulas accelerate cell turnover to fade pigmentation. We customize peel depth and formulation based on your pigmentation type and skin tone.

Best for: Sun spots, PIH, uneven tone, melasma (mild)

HydraFacial MD

The Brightening Boost HydraFacial uses alpha-arbutin and vitamin C to brighten discoloration while deeply hydrating. Zero downtime makes this ideal for maintenance between more intensive treatments.

Best for: Mild discoloration, maintenance, sensitive skin

BioRePeel

This zero-downtime bi-phasic peel combines TCA with brightening agents to exfoliate and even skin tone without the extended peeling of traditional chemical peels.

Best for: Surface-level pigmentation, maintenance, no-downtime brightening

RF Microneedling

When combined with brightening serums, RF microneedling creates microchannels that allow deeper penetration of depigmenting agents while stimulating collagen for overall skin renewal.

Best for: Deep pigmentation, textural concerns, combination approach

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to see results?+

Mild surface-level pigmentation may improve in 2-4 weeks with chemical peels. Deeper pigmentation like melasma typically requires 2-3 months of consistent treatment. We set realistic expectations during your consultation and track progress with our AI skin analysis system.

Is laser safe for hyperpigmentation on dark skin?+

Certain lasers can worsen pigmentation in darker skin tones. At Rani, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus with a 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which is safe for Fitzpatrick IV-VI skin types. However, we often recommend chemical peels or RF microneedling as first-line treatments for melanin-rich skin to minimize risk.

Can melasma be cured?+

Melasma is a chronic condition that can be managed but not permanently cured. We use combination protocols (peels + topicals + sun protection) to significantly improve melasma, but maintenance treatments and diligent sunscreen use are essential to prevent recurrence. Hormonal management may also be recommended.

Do I need sunscreen during treatment?+

Absolutely — sunscreen is the single most important factor in treating and preventing hyperpigmentation. We recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ (mineral preferred) applied daily, even on cloudy days. Without consistent sun protection, treatments will be significantly less effective.
